International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD) 3 Dec 2020

“Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”

Since 1992, the United Nations has commemorated the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). Observed on December 3 each year, the objectives are to raise awareness with support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. Disabilities can come in various forms and there are some that are so-called invisible.  Invisible disabilities describe a whole spectrum of hidden disabilities that may not be easily apparent but could be chronic illnesses and conditions that impair daily activities significantly. Thus, we need to be more aware and sensitive to these forms of disabilities too.

The United Nations commemorates IDPD with a theme every year. For year 2020, the theme is “Building Back Better: toward a disability-inclusive, accessible and sustainable post COVID-19 World”.  Everyone would agree that year 2020 has been very challenging and different with the Covid-19 pandemic.  In this regard, this year’s theme brims with hope that everyone will get over the pandemic and start building back better. It further advocates a disability-inclusive world that includes persons with disabilities in all aspects of our society.

This year, six of our college Chip Eng Seng Study Grant recipients are making an attempt to raise everyone’s awareness through their digital posters.  A key message in these posters is that people with disabilities are not disabled. In fact, many of them out there are trailblazers in their own chosen fields of science, sports and the arts.  Besides these students’ posters published here with the kind support of our library, our College library has curated relevant titles/resources and an in-library promotion to create more awareness and sharing. Exciting gifts will be given away.  Do take time to enjoy these resources and find out more about disabilities’ issues.

Library@West loan promotion with exciting free gifts from 25 Nov – 11 Dec 2020.

This event is brought to you by College West Student Development and supported by Library@West.
